Prizes
The following bullet points summarize the prizes in this challenge:
- 1. Deployment of the winning solution in Space on-board Intuition-1 (the approximate value of this prize is 50 000 EUR). The winning team will have the unique opportunity of running their solution on-board Inuition-1 – a 6U-class satellite, developed by KP Labs, with a data processing unit enabling on-board data processing acquired via a hyperspectral instrument that is planned to be launched in Q1 2023.
The KP Labs team will help the winners to run their solution on-board Intuition-1, and to prove its capabilities in the wild. Specifically, we will help with:
- Compiling the algorithm into an AI application that can be run on Leopard (the Intuition-1 data processing unit),
- Benchmarking the algorithm on the hardware platform and performing the acceptance tests on the ground,
- Uploading the application to the satellite,
- Running the application on-board Intuition-1 and downlinking the output data products (i.e., soil parameter predictions).
All technical details (including software interfaces, Vitis AI version, available memory, hyperspectral instrument characteristics, and so forth) will be specified for the winning team under an NDA agreement. On-board processing resources can be constrained due to power budget or thermal management. The experiment will be carried out once commissioning and satellite technology demonstration has been finished.
- 2. Joint journal paper. The top performing Teams will be invited to write a joint journal paper summarizing the challenge. We plan to invite TOP 5 teams, but this number may be increased. Note that the processing charge (if any) will be covered by KP Labs, hence the invited participants will not have to pay the publication fee.
- 3. Should the winning team not be eligible for the grand prize of launching their algorithm onboard Intuition-1, they can choose from the AI4EO prize catalogue for up to 7,000 points.
ICIP 2022 Grand Challenge

This challenge is a part of the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP) 2022 conference. IEEE ICIP is the premier international forum for the presentation of technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied image and video processing. The participants can submit the Challenge Session Paper describing their solution here. The deadline for submitting the paper is April 22, 2022.
Prize Eligibility
General
Only the Teams that will submit the Jupyter notebook presenting their algorithm will be considered for the prizes. If the solution turns out to be not reproducible, or if any concerns about its validity arise, the organizer's reserve the right to contact the team leader of the corresponding team to resolve such issues. If the issues cannot be resolved, the team will not be eligible to receive the prize (see the Challenge evaluation section of this website).
Deployment the winning solution in Space on-board Intuition-1
Due to the import restrictions, only EU entities can launch their algorithms on-board Intuition-1.
Announcements of the winners
The winners will be announced during the 2022 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP).
Ownership of your solution
Any of your IPR contained in the solution you will develop for this challenge will remain yours. While we ask you to submit the code at the end of this challenge to be eligible for the prizes, we will only use this to validate your approach. Any Organizer or other stakeholder who views your code will be required to sign a NDA. Please note that the solutions will be presented at the workshop and must be discussed in the papers, hence the high-level algorithms will be disclosed.
